Isobars not showing correctly

Post by Ruud » 29 Jul 2010 20:18

Hello everybody on the forum,
I just discovered a problem with isobars that are not showing the correct pressure. As a result of that the isobar spacing is incorrect too. The problem seems to be the grib file itself because other gribviewers behave identically with the same file. A GFS gribfile downloaded from Saildocs however does not have the problem. The attached screendump shows the issue.

Regards,
Ruud

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/degrib/
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/degrib/howto.php
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/degrib/download.php

HpaWrong.jpg
HpaWrong.jpg (60.39 KiB) Viewed 17936 times

X, Y, Latitude, Longitude, PRMSL_201007310000
1, 1, 38.000000, -12.000000, 95046
2, 1, 38.000000, -11.000000, 94977
3, 1, 38.000000, -10.000000, 94901
4, 1, 38.000000, -9.000000, 94813
5, 1, 38.000000, -8.000000, 94729
1, 2, 39.000000, -12.000000, 95073
2, 2, 39.000000, -11.000000, 94958
3, 2, 39.000000, -10.000000, 94846
4, 2, 39.000000, -9.000000, 94744
5, 2, 39.000000, -8.000000, 94666
1, 3, 40.000000, -12.000000, 95086
2, 3, 40.000000, -11.000000, 94934
3, 3, 40.000000, -10.000000, 94795
4, 3, 40.000000, -9.000000, 94689
5, 3, 40.000000, -8.000000, 94631
1, 4, 41.000000, -12.000000, 95100
2, 4, 41.000000, -11.000000, 94936
3, 4, 41.000000, -10.000000, 94795
4, 4, 41.000000, -9.000000, 94705
5, 4, 41.000000, -8.000000, 94678
1, 5, 42.000000, -12.000000, 95147
2, 5, 42.000000, -11.000000, 94996
3, 5, 42.000000, -10.000000, 94875
4, 5, 42.000000, -9.000000, 94811
5, 5, 42.000000, -8.000000, 94813

ZyGrib shows correctly invalid data from the file.

ZyGrib's requests concerns pressure at a level above sea level.

Very surprising, but should be checked.

or, ou bien

NOAA's server returns bad data.

Just had a look inside the IP packet...
Trame Ethernet, Paquet IP, Contrôle TCP, HTTP/PHP.

GET /noaa/getzygribfile2.php?but=prepfile&la1=42&la2=38&lo1=-12&lo2=-8&res=1&hrs=6&jrs=1&par=WP&l=a07622b82b18524d2088c9b272bb3feeb0eb1737&m=61c9b2b17db77a27841bbeeabff923448b0f6388&client=zyGrib-3.9.2 HTTP/1.1
Host: https://www.zygrib.org
User-Agent: zyGrib/3.9.2

Bonsoir DomH,

Donc tu dis que c'est :
NOAA's server returns bad data.

Hello,

Yes.

The content of the files have wrong data or problem of structure.

This is the only explanation of changing
1. as the soft on zygrib server and the zygrib reader (client side) have not been modified;
2. as I have a proto version allowing me to get meteo data from another source also treated by the server side soft. In this case, I got different result of the pressure (wrong with NOAA data, right with the other - I compare with local observed data).

Pressure of NOAA data is about 50 to 60 hPA too low.
Isotherm 0° is also wrong (0°C at 300-500 meter instead of 2500-4000 meter)
Geopotential altitude (which seems too low)

The problem is the same today (with apparently data coming from alternative nomad server - the high availability one is still down. Which may mean that structure was modified (type of data should not be modified as Grib format is normally a standard, even if not always correctly used).

I'll try to see if I can find info about all this (which may take sometimes, as NOAA web server is not really nicely structured)
